TalentBank.com Finding
a Photographer
I know that you have probably heard this all before, but there is no real easier
way around it. Finding a photographer can and most probably will be a very
tedious job, but, as all things, try to enjoy it. Photographers can be, and in
most cases are very interesting people to meet. You want to do your research and
make some decisions before you begin going to the photographers.
You must decide how permanent you want your headshots to be for. Do you want
these to be "the ones" or do you want something more temporary for now
so that you have something to take to casting calls with a resume. Better to
have something rather then nothing. If you have made the decision to go the less
permanent route, this will allow you to make an easier decision, although you
always want the work to look professional. The main difference is probably the
time that the photographer will put in to you.
THE THREE STEPS TO FINDING A PHOTOGRAPHER
1. The headshot should look like YOU! Not like someone else! It must look
like the same you that the casting director will see when you come in for the
audition. There are many situations where actors have shown up for auditions
based on their headshot and are left with a big disappointment in the end
because you are not what they were looking for. Your headshot is what they were
looking for. In many cases, you in person can get you the audition but your
headshot won't. Just look like you in your headshots.
2. Practice your smile! Don't have the photographer shoot you with a fake
smile. Practice your real smile. You're an actor, this should be easy. Just
"be happy." Your eyes must match your mouth in a smile. They glow.
"Your eyes are the windows to your soul."
3. Always see the photographer's work before you agree to shoot! And see
a variety of photographers in your price range (usually anywhere between $150
and $850 but could of course be higher or lower). If the Photographer is
referred, that may be an exception, but you should still always see the work
first.
And of course, have fun and remember that this is your business…your
livelihood. Be careful!
