TalentBank.com About Unions
American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA)
- AFTRA is open to anyone. All you have to do is make an appointment with the membership department of an AFTRA office and pay an initiation fee & dues for the first six months.
- Through the Taft-Hartley Law, an actor can work under the auspices of AFTRA for up to 30 days without joining the Union. After the 30 day period the actor must join AFTRA before any further work.
Screen Actors Guild (SAG)
- After an actor has been in AFTRA for one year and has had a speaking part of any length under AFTRA's jurisdiction, the actor is then able to join SAG.
- SAG will allow a non-SAG actor who works as an extra within SAG's jurisdiction at SAG rates for three days to become a member of SAG.
- An actor who has been a member of Actors Equity (AE) for one year and has performed a principal role within Equities jurisdiction is also eligible to join SAG.
- Employment of a principal or speaking role in a SAG film, videotape, television program or commercial may join SAG. Prospective employment of a principal or speaking role within two weeks or less by a SAG signatory company may also join SAG.
- Proof of employment may be in the form of a signed contract, a payroll check or check stub, or a letter from the company (on company letterhead). The documents must provide the applicant's name and Social Security number, the name of the production or the commercial (the product name), the salary paid in dollar amount, and the specific date(s) worked.
- SAG initiation fee is $1,192.00, plus the first semi-annual basic dues. Fees may be lower if you join in some branch areas or if you are a paid-up member of an affiliated performers' union. SAG basic annual dues are $100.00. In addition members will pay percentage dues of 1.85% of all earnings under SAG contracts up through $200,000, and 0.5% on all earnings from $200,001 through $500,000.
NOTE: This information is correct as of summer of 2000. After you fit the criteria above, you may want to go to www.sag.com for more detailed information.
Actors' Equity Association (AEA)
- An actor is eligible to join Actors' Equity Association after being a member of SAG or AFTRA for one year and had to have performed a principal role within that union's jurisdiction.
- You can also become a member of Equity through the Equity Membership Candidate Program (EMC), which requires working for fifty weeks, or forty if you pass a written exam, at participating Equity theatres.
- A one year member of AFTRA who has worked for three days as an extra within AFTRA's jurisdiction is also allowed to join Equity.
- NOTE: Once an actor becomes a member of Equity, he is not allowed to appear in non-Equity productions, and is also at a higher level of competition then before. Think about joining before you join. Joining Equity can hurt some more then help. Only join when you really feel you are ready to.
